The word “Happiness” is the most frequent term used by every parent when asked about their children. They say “we just want our kid to be happy”. Undoubtedly, every child deserves to have a happy childhood where he/she is having all the basic necessities and opportunities to foster their desires. But it is so unfortunate that there is a group of people whose children lack the attention and care at the very early stage of their birth.

Tihar Jail in New Delhi is one such largest prison in the world. Its 8 prison complexes are shelter to a population of about 13,100 prisoners against a capacity of 5,648. This prison population has about 518 women prisoners with about 40 children below 4 years of age.

The primary years when a child is supposed to have all the love, happiness and freedom of the outside world, the children of prisoners spend their lives behind the bar which becomes their entire world. This results in effecting the overall upbringing of a child leaving parents and children depressed and unhappy.

We believe that childhood is the best phase in a person’s life and it should be lived with full enthusiasm and liveliness. We adore innocence of children and to contribute towards the motivation of these children living, we took our time out to have an interesting visit comprising of a drawing competition along with the various prizes and eatables for them on 15th July-2015 at Jail No-6, Tihar Jail , New Delhi.

We noticed how small little things made them happy and how our conversation with them brought smiles on their faces. Our small effort not only helped these children feel special but also gave us immense pleasure and pride to be a part of this noble gesture.

When we were about to leave, a mix of happiness and some disappointments were there but we succeeded in our mission to spread happiness and a ray of hope by bringing them to the same platform like other children who enjoy fun activities, snacks and small surprises in terms of prizes and when we told them that we had to leave, they all gathered around us. We felt as if they didn’t want us to leave from there, the innocence in their eyes and the warmth in their hearts made us proud and left us fall in love with them.

Though Tihar Jail Management assures to give education, good nutrition and crèche facilities but still the social stigma of a prison term follows them their entire life that makes life within prison traumatic and depressing even after the prison.
